How DO YOU become an approved driving instructor in the UK?

Here are the 8 key steps to become an approved driving instructor (ADI) in the UK:

1. Check Eligibility Requirements
- You must have held a full UK driving license for at least 3 years
- Have no more than 6 penalty points on your license
- Be able to pass an eyesight test for reading a number plate from 20 meters (with/without glasses)

2. Apply and Get Background Checks
- Obtain a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check
- Apply to become a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
- Agree to the responsibilities outlined in the 'ADI register guide'

3. Get a Trainer and Prepare for Qualifying Tests
- Enroll with a DVSA-approved driving instructor training course provider like Bill Plant Driving School
- Get a registered trainer to help you prepare for the 3 ADI qualifying tests

4. Pass the ADI Part 1 Theory Test [3][4]
- Study topics like road procedures, traffic signs, vehicle mechanics
- Pass the multiple-choice theory test and hazard perception test

5. Pass the ADI Part 2 Driving Ability Test [3][4]
- Demonstrate your overall driving ability and vehicle safety knowledge

6. Optional: Get a Trainee License for Practice
- Apply for a 6-month trainee (PDI) license to get teaching experience

7. Pass the ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability Test
- Deliver a real-life driving lesson while being assessed by an examiner
- Demonstrate skills like risk management, lesson planning, teaching strategies

8. Register as an Approved Driving Instructor
- Once all 3 tests are passed, register with the DVSA within 12 months
- You can then legally charge for driving lessons by joining a school or operating independently

The process involves several assessments of your driving knowledge, instructional abilities and fitness to teach learners. Proper training from an approved provider like Bill Plant is highly recommended to prepare for the qualifying tests and increase chances of success.

HOW LONG DOES IN TAKE TO BECOME AN APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR IN THE UK?

Based on the information provided in the search results, the typical timeframe to become an approved driving instructor (ADI) in the UK can vary, but generally takes several months to over a year. Here are the key points regarding the duration:

1. Initial Application and Background Checks
- Obtaining a criminal record check (Disclosure and Barring Service) can take 2-6 weeks.
- Registering as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) with the DVSA and receiving your Personal Reference Number (PRN) can take 4-6 weeks.

2. Training and Preparing for Qualifying Tests
- There is no set timeframe for this as it depends on the individual's pace of study and training.
- Many enroll with approved instructor training courses which can range from a few weeks to several months.

3. Passing the Three ADI Qualifying Tests
  • ADI Part 1 (Theory Test): This can be taken once the PDI registration is complete.
  • ADI Part 2 (Driving Ability Test): This is taken after Part 1 is passed.
  • ADI Part 3 (Instructional Ability Test): Must be taken within 2 years of passing Part 1.

4. Final Registration as an ADI
- Once all three tests are passed, the application to officially register as an ADI must be done within 1 year of passing Part 3.
- The registration is valid for 4 years before renewal is required.

While there is no definitive timeframe, most sources suggest it typically takes a minimum of 6-12 months to complete the entire process from initial application to final ADI registration. This accounts for the background checks, training, preparing for and scheduling the three tests, as well as the final registration after all tests are passed.

However, the overall duration can be longer depending on factors like the individual's current driving experience, how quickly they prepare for each test, availability of test appointments, and any delays or need to retake tests.

Proper training from an approved instructor training provider is highly recommended to increase chances of passing the qualifying tests in a timely manner.

What is the COST OF BECOMING A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

According to the information provided in the search results, the cost of taking the ADI Part 1 test in the UK is:

£81

Specifically:
"The approved driving instructor (ADI) part 1 test is a theory test. It's the first of 3 tests you have to pass to qualify as an ADI. The test costs £81."

The official government website, indicates that the current cost for taking the ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) Part 1 theory test in the UK is £81.
